The Hôtel Campioni-Balasse was built around 1890 by architect Georges Dhaeyer for Justice of the Peace Charles Campioni-Balasse on the corner of Chaussée d'Haecht and Rue de l'Est. Built just 3 years before the neighbouring Maison Autrique (Victor Horta's first house in Brussels), this Flemish neo-Renaissance mansion illustrates the attachment of a certain Brussels milieu to historical styles at the turn of the century. Its red brick façade, with its corner loggette and stepped gables, combines neo-Gothic and Flemish neo-Renaissance elements. The interior of this private home has been listed since 2004, as it has preserved its original layout and remarkable decorative features (painted coffered ceilings, fireplaces, murals, stained glass windows, etc.), making this building a jewel of historicist architecture in Brussels.
