The former Knuyt de Vosmaer mansion’s richly decorated eclectic facade makes it the most prestigious building in the Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges district. Designed by Bruges architect Joseph-Jean Naert and completed in 1879 for the aristocrat Hector de Knuyt, it was purchased around 1900 by Baron Edouard Empain, who used part of it as the head office of his Belgian Industrial Bank, and converted the remainder into apartments for rent. The building is laid out behind three polychromatic bluestone and brick facades, featuring corner turrets, ornate dormer windows and an open-sided tower. The carriage entrance leads to a monumental white-marble-and-onyx staircase, lit by Neo-Renaissance stained-glass windows. The reception floor is decorated in an eclectic mix of styles, starting with a Neo-Gothic antechamber, followed by a large Louis XV salon and a Neo-Renaissance sitting room.
